#WomenBoycottTwitter Is Trending Despite the Boycott

Dozens of celebrities took to Twitter to boycott the social media platform on Friday in solidarity with actress Rose McGowan and as a protest against the silencing of women’s voices, especially victims of sexual assault.
The idea for the protest came after McGowan’s Twitter account was briefly suspended Thursday.
Celebrities deciding to boycott on Friday include Alyssa Milano, Chrissy Teigen, Mark Ruffalo, Terry Crews, Kathy Griffin, Anna Paquin, Jeffrey Wright, and several more.
Despite the boycott, the hashtag is trending Friday because of users who feel women are silencing themselves. “Instead of #womenboycottwitter why don’t we bombard twitter. Give it hell. Get all up in it’s face. Make some noise. Be brave. F— s–t up,” tweeted actress Amanda Abbington.

“I’ve been silenced by misogyny far too much to now do it voluntarily. EVERYONE should shout louder against sexism,” tweeted author Melissa Cole.
But as Griffin put it Thursday, “#WomenBoycottTwitter will not silence us, but @Twitter will make much less $$ b/c of fewer clicks. I’m in.”
