On Sunday, Universal debuted a new action-packed and genuinely terrifying trailer for its reboot of “The Mummy.”
The new clip opens with three scavengers who discover an old prison, where the story of Sofia Boutella’s mummy is revealed. We find out that in Ancient Egypt, she was supposed to become the next Pharaoh, “but her thirst for power led her down a dark path.”
Somehow Tom Cruise’s character resurfaces the mummy and is taken on a dangerous adventure alongside Jake Johnson and Annabelle Wallis. There are a lot of creepy crawlies, just like in the original movies. Boutella’s mummy meanwhile keeps popping up to terrorize the heroes in creative ways.
“She will not stop until she makes our world her own,” says Russell Crowe’s voiceover in the trailer.
At a presentation for the new movie last week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Boutella told audiences that “playing a monster was really interesting to me, but also the fact that the mummy was a woman. Whenever something happens, there’s always a monster within us.”
So far, Universal’s modern-day “The Mummy” franchise includes 1999’s “The Mummy,” 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” The films have grossed more than $1.25 billion worldwide.
“The Mummy” is set to hit theaters June 9, 2017.
