House of Commons members in London are on lockdown on Wednesday following reports of a shooting outside of British Parliament.
Images of people who appear to be wounded are being broadcast on news channels, including the BBC and CNN. There has been at least one fatality, a woman, according to Sky News which is citing a report from St. Thomas’ Hospital. Doctors say some people have “catastrophic injuries,” according to the news outlet, which is reporting that “several” people have been injured.
Several witnesses heard gunfire near Portcullis House, which is building that houses lawmakers and their staff, according to the New York Times.
A police officer was also stabbed in the vicinity, according to the BBC, in what police are treating as a terrorist incident.
House of Commons Leader David Lidington told MPs the “alleged assailant was shot by armed police,” per the BBC, which is also relaying reports of as many as five people having been “mowed down” on Westminster Bridge, which is near the Parliament building.
Lawmakers on the scene reported hearing three to four gunshots. Prime Minister Theresa May is “OK,” according to BBC sources.
