Bruce Springsteen Takes on ‘Con Man’ Trump in New Protest Song
A new song featuring The Boss, called “That’s What Makes Us Great,” is about exactly who you think.
Bruce Springsteen and his longtime friend Joe Grushecky collaborated on the President Trump protest song, which premiered Wednesday on Sirius XM — it’s now available for purchase.
Grushecky, a musician best known for his band the Houserockers, told The Pittsburgh Post Gazette he wrote the song back in January after Trump was inaugurated and ran it by Springsteen.
“I had this song, and Bruce and I had been talking. I sent it to him and he liked it,” Grushecky said. “I said, ‘What do you think about singing on it?’ He gave it the Bruce treatment.”

The two actually sing on the track together, which features lyrics such as “Some wanna slam the door/Instead of opening the gate/Aw, let’s turn this thing around/Before it gets too late,” and “It’s up to me and you/Love can conquer hate/I know this to be true/That’s what makes us great.”
The song goes on to call Trump “a con man” and members of his administration “crooks.”
Both Grushecky and Springsteen have spoken out against the new president. In the Post Gazette interview, Grushecky said Trump lost him when he started making fun of special needs people, referring to a now infamous moment when Trump appeared to mock a disabled reporter at a South Carolina campaign rally.
“Regardless of all the other [stuff], that to me is appalling,” Grushecky, who has taught in schools, said. “I have special needs people in my family and in my neighborhood. I worked with special needs people my whole life and I was really offended by it.”

Springsteen was a Hillary Clinton supporter throughout the 2016 election season. A Democrat, he even played a secret show for President Obama’s staff to reward them for their hard work. While he didn’t attend the Women’s March the day after the Inauguration, he did send his support from a concert in Perth, Australia.
“We rallied against hate and division and in support of tolerance, inclusion, reproductive rights, civil rights, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, the environment, wage equality, gender equality, health care and immigrant rights,” said Springsteen to a crowd in Perth. “We stand with you. We are the new American resistance.”
You can purchase the song now over on Grushecky’s website.
